Over the last month however the pure simplicity of the tube bandana has made it indispensable in the fight against Covid 19. During his 3rd April press briefing President Trump announced that the Center for Diesease Control and Prevention were recommending the use of non medical face coverings for all US Citizens while outside of their homes. With all medical grade face masks set aside for Health Workers, the general public scrambled to find an alternative. While some handcrafters searched online how to make a facemask, a large proportion of the population realised that using a bandana as a mask would be a perfect solution. With their myriad of colors and designs, and soft flexible nature, photos of tube bandana wearing instagramers soon filled social media, setting an unprecedented example .
Although the effects of the present pandemic will be felt by everyone for many months to come, heres hoping that once life returns to a relative normal those newly introduced to the multifunctional beauty of seamless tube bandanas will continue to use them for more pleasant passtimes. Heres to the times when we get back on our boats, and bikes, hike up mountains and catch that big one that always got away!
In the meantime stay safe and stay home and follow the rules…just for once;)

]]>The qualities and appearance of leather can also vary depending on the type of tanning process used in its making. The majority of leather products that you’ll come across are made using a chrome tanning process. The skilled artisans at Biz Levanten who produce the handcrafted leather accessories available for purchase through Balance Headwear prefer to work with vegetable-tanned leather – what some refer to as vegetan leather.
Chrome tanning offers manufacturers some significant benefits. First and foremost, it is fast – much faster than vegetable tanning, in fact. Because the tanning process can be done quickly, chrome tanning can deliver more product at a lower cost. On the downside, using minerals like minerals like the chromium sulfate that gives chrome tanning its name can be harmful to the environment.
Vegetable tanning, on the other hand, produces high quality-leather without the use of harsh chemicals. This process goes back thousands of years. (Historians estimate that tanning was first developed around 6000 BCE.) Vegetable tanning is also the most intricate and, therefore, the most time-consuming process.
While the name may you think that the vegetable tanning process involves broccoli, carrots and perhaps squash, it really draws on tannic acids naturally found in the bark, branches or leaves of certain plant species.
So, if you’re considering the purchase of one of our incredible biker leather face masks, handcrafted leather postman shoulder bags or any of our other leather accessories, know that you can buy with confidence.

]]>It’s easy to conjure up the image of Rosie the Riveter. Who hasn’t seen that iconic image with Rosie’s hair held back by a red bandana? But long before Rosie pulled her hair back and went to work, bandannas were being put to use all around the world.
As the folks at Mental Floss explain, “The word bandana has origins in the Sanskrit badhnati, the verb “to tie,” referring to a technique of tie-dyeing cloth. By the 18th century, the world evolved into the anglicized “bandannoes,” which referred to cotton handkerchiefs.”
The traditional red paisley bandana reflects the influence of Persia and Turkey on the development of the beloved bandana, as Mental Floss tells us:
“Called Turkey red, the bandana’s signature color was the result of a laborious method of fast-dyeing cotton textiles. The process varied, but manufacturers usually bathed the cotton in fish oil, sheep’s dung, madder root, and ‘intestinal liquor.’”
The traditional paisley print comes to us from Persia, via Scotland. The pattern is based on the boteh or buta, a Persian motif that is said to be a stylized representation of a floral spray and a cypress tree. Beginning in the 1700s, the pattern made its way to Europe thanks to the East India Company. It became known as paisley because the mills in Paisley, Scotland adopted the pattern, which became incredibly popular.
You’ll never guess who made bandanas a trendy accessory in North America. It was Martha Washington! She had pictures of her hubby George printed on some of them, which made them incredibly popular.
And now we’re writing a new chapter in the history of this iconic headwear! From flag bandanas to our popular camouflage bandana, we have brought the bandana into the 21st century with designs that are both stylish and functional. Check out our whole collection and see for yourself!
]]>Of course while participating in their sport of choice, dressing the part has become just as important.
One of the most recent sport style trends is the use of headbands or colored bandanas, ideal for holding back hair and absorbing perspiration. Generally made from a stretchy microfibre material, they are a perfect headwear choice.
So what is the main difference between bandannas and headbands? Headbands or hairbands, as some prefer, are bands of material used just as their name suggests, to hold your hair off your face.
With the comeback of Yoga, the modest headband has regained popularity and no self respected Yogi will leave home without their mat or hairband. Practically, they give not only a perfect camoflage for greasy or untouched roots but also absorb the hardearned droplets of sweat creeping down your temple.
Primarily seamless tube bandanas are as their name suggests, just that, tubes of material with no seams, the lack of which gives for a comfortable fit. Traditional bandana styles were previously favoured by motorcycle riders and skull bandanas and flag bandanas were used more as biker masks rather than headwear. The tube bandana trend however has given way to an endless selection of cool badanans for every taste although the classic camouflage bandana still remains a firm favourite.
The main difference between the two however is the versitality of the tube bandana. Not only can they be used in exactly the same way as the headband, but can used in over 12 different other styles and offer SPF and wind protection. More and more seamless tube bandanas are making their way into gyms and studios and have taken their place onto the heads of the the rich and famous as cred Street wear.
So before hitting the gym this week don’t forget to pack your coolest bandana or headband!
]]>According to the official Sturgis Motorcycle Rally timeline, the very first Sturgis Rally was held in 1938. It was known as the Black Hills Classic at that time and was held on August 14th. Only nine participants and a handful of spectators turned out for the race.
Here are some other historic highlights from the official timeline:
If you’re heading to Sturgis with those cool bandanas and leather accessories you got from Balance Headwear this year, be sure to take a picture and post it on our Facebook page! Can’t get away this year? Check out our selection of flag, camouflage and colored bandanas as well as neck gaiters and motorcycle bags.
]]>Bike riders however have evolved as much as their machines over the decades and now riding gear, such as leather accessories, biker leather face masks, headwear, and the coolest bandanas have become a huge part of the lifestyle.
Luggage is available in a miriad of styles and colors to fit every model of bike, but naturally colored vegetan leather saddlebags, handcrafted leather front fork bags and leather side bags are still considered the ultimate status symbol.
Biker leather facemasks on the other hand are the choice of hard core bikers. Generally handcrafted with vegetan leather, the leather facemasks cover the nose and mouth and often come studded, laced or handpainted with skulls and other classic biker symbolizm. The sight of a rider moving towards you on a highway with a leather facemask sporting a learing skeleton design is a formidable sight for sure !
The mainstay however and the the one accessory that has remained a constant throughout the evolution of bike riding is the humble motorcycle bandana. Motorcycle bandanas have themselves evolved into variations such as tube or seamless bandanas, triangle bandana designs and incorporate a new breed of materials such as coolmax which offers a cooler feel and extra absorbency. Bandanas for sale at any motorcycle accessory store, offer not only SPF protection, they also give superb wind protection, and in the case of the seamless tube bandannas, sweat absortion in the form of headbands or skull caps.
So whether you favour leather side bags, leather facemasks or some of the coolest trend bandana designs such as skull bandanas, multicolored camouflage bandanas or even flag bandanas; make sure that when you start your bike this weekend you have truely embraced the science of biker accessorizing.
]]>I haven’t personally tried all of these ways, but I still wanted to share all the different ways you could potentially wear a bandana in case you wanted to try for yourself. I’ll provide examples of ways I’ve worn my bandana when I’ve got a photo.
I’ve personally never worn it like this (yet!), but I’ve seen girls really MAKE an outfit by wearing their bandana like this. I need to give it a try for sure. What about you?
If you’re wearing a basic outfit and want a little extra touch, you can tie the bandana in a bow on one of your belt loops. Again, super simple but cute!
